Artist Research Log: 


Henri Cartier-Bresson:



Denotation: Youth at play, destruction, nostalgia
Connotation: Man-made destruction causes the loss of childhood, social inequality
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Social inequality of the poor, war earns the rich money and exploits the poor

Don McCullin:


Denotation: Conflicting ideals, conflict of Northern and Republic of Ireland
Connotation: Police brutality, the voice of the public against the violence of the institutions
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The violence of the government, the socially controlling law

Danny Quirk:



Denotation: The anatomical body structure
Connotation: Societal beauty standards are pulling people apart, beneath our skin we are all the same, seeking self-improvement from within
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Society has certain expectations of beauty that it forces onto people until they become so tormented that they rip themselves apart



Denotation: A soldier
Connotation: The two faces of a soldier, the struggles of PTSD, the hidden grief felt by soldiers, the emotions of masculine men which are usually disregarded
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The lack of help from governments for soldiers with PTSD, "AYUDAR" is not a name but instead means "HELP" in Spanish which depicts a cry for help

Dan Mountford:



Denotation: People within locations
Connotation: Inside each person is a network (interpreted from the joint up lines) that connects us to our surroundings, a large part of our identity is linked to our social upbringing such as where we were born
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: We are not individuals with identities but instead are simply another connection within the social group based on location, we are what surrounds us

Jenny Holzer:



Denotation: Language rebelling against society's norms
Connotation: It could imply that war is futile, due to the reflection in the water it could refer to victims dying of dysentery or contamination of water supplies in third world countries 
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Too many people have died for futile causes such as basic diseases, war or violence



Denotation: Power is abusive
Connotation: Governments, dictators and even everyday people abuse power for their own gain, rebelling against the strict social control of powerful will only result in more issues such as violence and brutality
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: People feel oppressed by the socially controlling powerful instates within society such as government, police etc

Barbara Kruger:



Denotation: Retro style, bold colours
Connotation: Women are often not seen as heroes, women are often portrayed as a damsel in distress whilst men as heroes
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The boy and girl have already been socialised through gender socialisation into their masculine and feminine roles



Denotation: Plastic surgery, procedure, beauty
Connotation: We are told that we are all beautiful but that we need to improve our beauty to reach the beauty standards of society
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Society expects women to be beautiful to match the media representation of women which have been through plastic surgery, photo manipulation and editing

Denotation: The male and female genders
Connotation: Women are social beings whilst men are workers and breadwinners. 
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Gender inequality, social prejudices, gender role socialisation, could also present class as the female clothing is elaborate and opulent whilst the male image is a manual labourer


Denotation: Gender, colour
Connotation: Female sexuality, sexuality as part of the opulent lifestyle.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Female sexuality has often been oppressed and hidden due to societies perceptions of males as sexual beings whilst women are displayed as nurturing figures 


Denotation: Different ideologies
Connotation: Media representation and sharing of news to the masses is manipulated to tell the stories that the bourgeoisie want to be shared
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Socially, the bourgeoisie control the distribution of mass media which therefore influences the perceptions of the passive proletariat through the hypodermic syringe model; the world is conflicted due to the political parties that are supported by certain newspapers which means there are various "truths" being shared to the masses

Denotation: The female gender
Connotation: The restrictions of the female gender, home abortions due to the negativity women face surrounding unwanted pregnancies
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: There has been multiple political campaigns stating that women who have abortions are committing murder, these anti-abortion campaigners claim that they are "pro-life" but this simply forces women into dangerous home abortions



Denotation: Difficulties of the female gender
Connotation: Females have to fight to be believed they have been raped due to the subculture that females are to blame for males raping them
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: There have been many court cases in the foreground recently such as the musicians Kesha's case where females are told they are to blame for their sexual assault; common questioning of females involves what they were wearing, whether they were intoxicated as society places the blame of rape on its victims



Denotation: Inequality between genders
Connotation: Women are stronger than perceived by society, women are able to fulfil the roles previously assigned to males but still do not receive equal pay for their work
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The 1970 Equal Pay Act was established in the United Kingdom but many companies are still manipulating the system and paying women less than men: in America most women are still earning 75 cents to the 1 dollar that their male counterparts are earning
