Henri Cartier-Bresson:
Social Change



Denotation: Childhood, nostalgia (black and white), depth, social change.
Connotation: Urban lifestyle is overtaking childhood, the social inequality of society.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The proletariat are in a poor state due to exploitation from the bourgeoisie and the costs of war etc. 




Denotation: Nostalgia, a journey.
Connotation: The journey of life through chaotic society, people are too busy to slow down and appreciate the small things in life, life is a labyrinth we have to negotiate at speed
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Historically, towns were smaller and lots of people, specifically in France, negotiate travel via the means of bicycles.




Denotation: Being alone, everyday activities
Connotation: Judgement, we are all alone facing society by ourselves
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: The changing styles of time periods, advancement of fashion, changing ideals about the display of female bodies

Information: 
Cartier-Bresson employed a technique called 'the golden ratio' when exploring photography. This is a compositional technique which has often been simplified to 'the rule of thirds'. 

Cartier-Bresson was also a pioneer of 'the decisive moment' in which a single photographic frame can capture the whole narrative of the image. 

Martin Parr:
British Life


Denotation: Holiday park, working.
Connotation: Working classes, unhappy in a low class job, the male gaze (the older boy objectifying the female), stereotypically British, summer holiday business.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: 1983-1986, British economy in the seaside towns was dramatically declining under a conservative government, the working classes were being made poorer, city areas were becoming more capitalist and supporting conspicuous consumption; emergence of the 'Yuppie' the Young Upwardly-mobile Professional. 


Denotation: Seaside resort, family holiday.
Connotation: Socialisation process of the female gender into a nurturing. parental role, declining welfare of working class areas.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: 1983-1986, British economy in the seaside towns was dramatically declining under a conservative government, the working classes were being made poorer, city areas were becoming more capitalist and supporting conspicuous consumption; emergence of the 'Yuppie' the Young Upwardly-mobile Professional.


Denotation: Holiday rush, queuing, consumption.
Connotation: The British stereotype of queuing, working class holidays, unhealthy food ate by the working-classes due to what is affordable.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: 1983-1986, British economy in the seaside towns was dramatically declining under a conservative government, the working classes were being made poorer, city areas were becoming more capitalist and supporting conspicuous consumption; emergence of the 'Yuppie' the Young Upwardly-mobile Professional.



Fay Godwin:
Environmental Changes


Denotation: Car, lake, nature, man-made structures, nostalgia (black and white).
Connotation: The battle between man and nature, humans are encroaching and damaging the environment beyond repair, nostalgia that if we continue on this road then the only time we will witness nature in all of its beauty will be in old photographs.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Godwin lived through some of the most important modern advances of technology and man and saw its impacts upon the environment, Godwin saw the advancement in motor-vehicles, changing in fossil fuels (closing of mines in the 1980s) etc.


Denotation: Dog, animals, nature, fences.
Connotation: Division of land and nature, the freedom of animals in their natural habitat, humans laying claim to land.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Godwin lived through some of the most important modern advances of technology and man and saw its impacts upon the environment, Godwin saw the advancement in motor-vehicles, changing in fossil fuels (closing of mines in the 1980s) etc.


Denotation: A pathway, a road, nature, man made structures.
Connotation: Humans encroaching further and further into sacred nature, the immensity of nature, aspects of nature (such as weather) that cannot be controlled by humans, the road to saving the natural environment.
Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Meaning: Godwin lived through some of the most important modern advances of technology and man and saw its impacts upon the environment, Godwin saw the advancement in motor-vehicles, changing in fossil fuels (closing of mines in the 1980s) etc.
